Our kids love to paint with household items. We’ve used scrubby sponges, toothbrushes, wire whisks, hair brushes, etc. I bet you can think of more. The children also enjoy tracing kitchen items.

Room collages. I teach four and five-year-olds and they enjoy cutting from magazines. I give each child (or you could use teams of two or three children) a room assignment and they hunt through magazines to find objects that belong in that room. We can put the final results together to make an entire home!

We are trying something new this year in our center. We are doing at home projects the first one we did was sending home a HOUSE we wrote a letter to parents explaining what we were doing and asked them to decorate “their house” like their real one, they had to do it with their child. It was a great success our parent loved the idea and the children loved having “homework”. We cut out house shapes on tag board and told parents to decorate them with pictures, paint, buttons, etc. Good luck!

I work in a little preschool in Hvammstangi, Iceland and in my class there are 1-3 years old children. We have a theme going to our school called “Me and my family” and among many projects, we have one regarding homes and buildings that people live in. We take a few walks around our little town and take pictures of the children in front of the house they live in. When the pictures are ready we put them on a big poster and have them in our circle time to talk about and it makes excellent source for questions: Which is the biggest/smallest house, how many windows, who lives there, is it an apartment building or does only one family live there, etc. Afterwards, we hang the poster on the wall and they love to point out their house and show mom and dad at the end of the day!

Paint a large cereal box, decorate it to look like a hose with construction paper. Cut out the back of the box and paint the inside as well. Then paste cut outs of magazines of the different parts of the house inside.

  1. Edible  House

Supplies per child: 1 1/2 slices of bread, 1 T. jam or cheese spread, 2 Saltine crackers, 1/4 of a rectangle graham cracker.

Provide each child with one slice of bread and a another piece sliced diagonally. Have them put the whole slice on a plate and the diagonal slice on top to represent the roof (wide side down). Put a tablespoon of jam or cheese spread on the bread as the “paint” and have the child spread it on the house. Give them two Saltine crackers to place on each upper side of the whole bread slice (windows) and the quarter piece of graham cracker (door) between the Saltine crackers.
This is a good fine motor activity as well as helping children to recognize a square, triangle, and rectangle shape. Then, they can enjoy eating the house!
