Berry preschool theme ideas for children through the second grade.

When I read the book “Jamberry” to my class, I fill a hat with pom poms in shades of blue and purple. These look just like berries and the kids like to spoon them out of the hat or use tweezers to take them out. This is great for fine motor development.

Another game idea is to play a “Duck, Duck, Goose” style game. Replace the words with “Blue, Blue, Berry” or “Jam, Jam, Berry”.

A great idea that develops preschool science and math skills is to make up a batch of jam with your class. If you use freezer jam it is so simple. You need to set aside a good hour to allow the children to help with the measuring and pouring of ingredients. when the jam is finished, you can give the kids a taste of their “science project” on a cracker and send the rest home in small glass jars. This is a bit messy, but the kids really love it. Parents liked the jam, too! You could also attach a business-size note with a ribbon around the jar with the jam recipe or a berry poem on it.

After reading the book “The Giant Jam Sandwich” have a snack of jam sandwiches. This is a favorite book for my kids, it’s wonderful.

Bring a blender into the classroom and make berry smoothies! Berry juice will stain clothing, so supervise and use smocks.

This is a great preschool favorite, which is especially loved during a berry unit.

“Peanut Butter and Jelly”

Chorus:

Peanut, peanut butter, jelly!

Peanut, peanut butter, jelly!

(stomping with feet)

First, you take the peanuts and you smash ’em, you smash ’em, you smash ’em, smash ’em, smash ’em!

Chorus

(bring palms together and twist them)

Next, you take the berries and you squash ’em, you squash ’em, you squash ’em, squash ’em, squash ’em!

Chorus

(pretend to spread PB & J on your palm)

Then you take the bread and you spread, you spread, you spread, spread, spread!

Chorus

(clapping with hands)

Now you take the slices and you squish ’em, you squish ’em, you squish ’em, squish ’em, squish ’em!

Chorus

(pretend to eat)

Last you take the sandwich and you eat it, you eat it, you eat it, eat it, eat it!

Chorus (as if your mouth were full)

Menugh, menugh munner, delly!

Menugh, menugh munner, delly!
