Yom Kippur Misc

I got this one from a friend.  To teach the meaning of repentance, you have two people (preferably teacher and teacher’s aid) hold a long piece of string.  You explain that one person is God and that the other person is each one of them (a “normal” person.)  Each child comes to the string and with scissors cuts the string to symbolize a sin that he/she has committed.  To “repent” the sin, he/she ties (they will probably need help with that) the string together.  This is continued until each child has cut and tied the string and at the end the string will be shorter, meaning that the line between God and human is destroyed by sin and made closer by repentance.  You can also do this with older kids and adults.
