To help the children understand the meaning of “al het” or “missing the mark” (ie: not always being as perfect as we would like to be all the time), I placed a large round container (basket, plastic bowl, wastepaper basket) on the floor in the front of the room. I then had the children stand about ten feet away and try and toss a bean bag into the container. More often than not, they would miss. We talked about how they felt about missing the container, that they were really trying their hardest and despite that, they still missed sometimes. We then discussed how this happens when we try to be good all the time – sometimes we slip up. Then, help the children discern how that they can always improve their behavior, make amends and renew.
