• Contact_FullName: Darcy Contact_Email: cassiaflower33@hotmail.com Area: Monster art Idea: Why not make a mask. I have lots of masks from different cultures. Once I gave the children a cut out mask with a "Thankful" tasting theme and glued seeds on it in a collage. Contact_FullName: Barb Zuber Contact_Email: fzbz98@comcast.net Area: Monsters-art Idea: Mummies We made mummies in my preschool class! I traced a cutout onto black paper(ginger-bread man shape works well). The children then glued scraps of white gauze to the outline and added two black eyes. Very cute! Contact_FullName: Annie Contact_Email: littlefeather1185@yahoo.com Area: Dinosaurs / Monsters Idea: Draw dinosaurs or monsters and staple together most of the way leaving a hole big enough to stuff with paper and then finish stapling together. Get a large sheet of white paper long enough to fit a whole child's body on, Trace one child on the paper, then have another child lie on the paper and trace them over the other child's tracing, when you are finish have both children paint or color their 4 armed 4 legged 2 headed monster! You will need: paper plate, scissors, popsicle sticks, glue, tape or stapler, collage materials: tissue paper squares, string, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, colored macaroni, colored paper etc... Cut eye holes in the paper plates. Set out collage materials, scissors and glue. Each child gets a plate. Children can design their own monster masks using the collage materials. staple or tape the popsicle sticks to the bottom of the plate. Allow to dry then children can use them as masks. We started with a squirt of paint on a plain piece of paper, then we took a fat straw cut in half and the kids blew the paint causing the paint to spread. The kids chose different colors and some did it once and others did it up to 5 times. Most turned out to be round like formations. After the paint dried they glued on eyes and feathers of choice. Looks good on black paper. This is an easy project with great results.
12-5-00Give children a plastic cup. Have them decorate the cup like a monster. You can have the children fill the cup with cotton balls dipped in water and sprinkle grass seeds inside. A monster with lots of green hair!
10-23-00Cook spaghetti noodles add oil so they are not sticky then let children by handful, dunk noodles in paint, then onto paper, remove noodles. When dry add eyes, mouths, teeth etc. using variety of materials makes a "spaghetti monster". Ask them to tell you about their spaghetti monsters favorite things. Name them. Discuss monster do not have to be scary they can be silly and friendly.
10-7-00We turned the water table into a cutting center. We through in a few different colors of construction paper along with some tissue paper, pipe cleaners, cotton and other misc. items. The students stood at the water table and practiced cutting the items into the table. We then used the scraps and made a monster collage to go along with the book "Go Away Big Green Monster."
10-2-00Give the kids paint googily eyes etc. to make a monster. Talk about how monsters aren't real they come from our imaginations and they can look any any way we want. Then have children vote on how many eyes ears noses mouths etc we w ant our monsters to have.
8-27-00Fold a large sheet of paper in half open it up and on one side put several colors of paint in squirts. Glitter paint by Crayola works great .fold paper in half allow children to press the paint around and make it smooth. Open the paper allow to dry while children create eyes and mouths and noses on white paper and color them. Also provide wiggle eye, yarn, sequins, and what ever you have around, glue these to the paper to make monsters they are awesome and kids get very excited at the results.
5-28-00Scribble monsters: The children scribble on a paper with whatever items they like. Once the scribble is finished add 2 moveable eyes to complete the Scribble Monster.
5-1-00The children in my class absolutely love the story Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley. To incorporate this story into a fun art activity cut out the features of the monster (scraggly purple hair, sharp white teeth etc.,) then provide the kids with easel paper and dishes of different shades of green paint and have them create their own Big Green Monsters! Definitely a favorite of my kids!
