Monster Books
• Contact_FullName: Jean Contact_Email: 3days@rollanet.org Area: Monster Books Idea: My students love Anna and the Little Green Dragon. Terrific series, now out of print. I use Liz from The Magic School Bus as Little Green Dragon, and Dudley The Dragon as the Mama Dragon. In the first book, Little Green Dragon comes out of the cornflake box. (Get cornflakes today, 2 boxes, one for the dragon & one for your Word Wall.) Little Green Dragon gets in Anna's breakfast cocoa & makes footprints on the tablecloth - cover a table with white paper or a bleachable tablecloth, mix brown paint or chocolate pudding (correct smell) and have students make 'dragon footprints' with prepared feet cut from potatoes. Little Green Dragon Steps Out has additional extension opportunities -- Little Green Dragon plays with Lego blocks, finds a doll umbrella, get in a sock. Then climbs back into Anna's storybook! Big Green Monster Masks: I make these with children 2 1/2+ Read the book "Go Away Big Green Monster." Get large paper plates and paint them green. Complete the mask by following the story's descriptions of each part of the face. Tape or staple a large popsicle stick to the end as a handle. You may have to go ahead and cut the facial pieces out for smaller children. For the older ones, tracing and cutting out may be appropriate. Read the story before and after making the mask. Also, as you add each part of the face, say the part of the book (ex. "Big green monster has a big, red, scary mouth). The kids love this, and it helps them remember the story to tell to others. |
