Luau Art

We make Hawaiian print shirts and dresses. Have each child cut out a shirt or dress shape from construction paper. I pour tempra paint in shallow containers and have children dip plumeria flowers into the paint and press it onto the construction paper cutouts. They are cute displayed on a clothesline. I have them finish up on another day by gluing the clothes onto a large sheet of paper and then drawing in the rest of their body using multicultural markers.

Note: If you don’t have pumeria, you can use flower shaped sponges or any other real or artificial flower.

Tiki men

first cut out a tiki man shape then cut out of black construction paper a funny shaped nose and mouth and strange looking eyes have children glue the features on and then have them marble paint then fuchsia, turquoise, and purple to give the authentic Hawaiian look.

For fun and quick leis cut apart the sections of cardboard egg cartons. Have the children paint them different colors and then string them on yarn to fit around the child’s neck. They love this project and it is easy to gather the egg cartons…Just ask the parents for donations!

The children punched a hole on each and of a sentence strip. then we added string on each end. the children wrote their names, (or the best that they can) in the middle of sentenced strip. Then on the back they glued strips of streamers to create a hula skirt. later on we used them to dance to Hawaiian music. The children really enjoyed this activity.

Hula dancing is a fun, great activity but don’t forget about fire dancing. Create “fire sticks” with paper towel roles and orange, red, and yellow streamers. Turn on the music and let the kids dance just like they do at a real luau.
