Hanukkah Songs For Preschoolers

Hanukkah Songs For Preschoolers

(to Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)

Twinkle, twinkle Hanukkah lights shining brightly for 8 nights.

See the dreidel spin around, eat some latke crisp and brown.

Twinkle, twinkle Hanukkah lights shining brightly for 8 nights.

LATKES AND APPLESAUCE (tune: Down by the Station)

Latkes and applesauce in my tummy.
Latkes and applesauce, yummy, yummy, yummy! (rub tummy)
I open up my mouth and gobble, gobble, gobble. (pretend to put food in mouth with both hands)
I eat so much that I can only wobble! (hold arms out from body and wobble side to side)

(Ask the children for their favorite foods. Substitute those for latkes and applesauce in the song.)

Sung to the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”

I’ve been lighting all the candles
On this Hanukah night.
I’ve been lighting all the candles
Just to see them shining bright.
Flicker, flicker little candle
Fill me with your glow
Now the time has come to count them
Ready set let’s go!

(Count candles)

“Latkes” (sung to the theme song for the Flintstone’s cartoon)

Latkes, eat some latkes, They’re a Hanukkah delicacy.

Eaten with sour cream, or applesauce is really fancy.

Fried in olive oil just right, reminds us of the miracle of light

Latkes, eat some latkes, they’re a Hanukkah del-, Hanukkah del, Hanukkah delicacy.

Hanukkah Lights (sung to 6 Little Ducks)

Nine little candles in my Hanukkah light,
Burning brightly throughout the night.
But one little candle is taller than the rest,
We call that candle the Shamash.

We light the candles one by one,
We play with dreidels and have some fun.
We dance the hora and tell the story,
Of Judah Maccabee and his glory.

Dreidel Song

I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay, And when it’s dry and ready, Oh, dreidel I will play.

Oh, Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay; And when it’s dry and ready, Then dreidel I shall play.

It has a lovely body, With legs so short and thin, And when it gets all tired, It drops and then I win. Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay, And when it’s dry and ready, Then dreidel I shall play

“On My Hanukkah Menorah”

(Hold up hands with thumbs together for the Shamus (Helper candle) and four fingers on each side representing the eight candles) Tune: 1 Little, Two Little, Three Little…..

One little two little three little candles…. Four little, five little, six little candles…. Seven little, Eight little, Nine little candles…. On My Hanukkah Menorah.

Other verses: (Jump little candles….Melt little candles)

Finger Play for Chanukah. Hold up your hands with your thumbs touching. Say

“Here is my Menorah, eight candles burning bright.” Wiggle your fingers.

Then fold fingers into hand leaving the thumbs showing, say

“The middle on is the shamash (helper candle) it keeps them burning bright.

while playing sing and turn the dreidel

I had a little dreidel
I made it out of straw
It went 90 miles an hour
And broke the speeding law!

Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel, I’m spinning round and round
Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel, I’m spinning round and round
I’ll spin and spin and spin and spin and then I’ll fall down.

Children really enjoy acting out the directions.

Pass one dreidel round and round

Round and round, round and round

Pass one dreidel round and round

    Round the circle.
