Tell the children that you have one of the most important people in the
world inside your special box. Have the children take turns guessing who
it is. Then allow them one at a time to look inside the box. (Inside the
box you put a large mirror, so when the children look inside they see
themselves.) After they have all had a turn looking inside the box, ask
them the question again. Explain to them that they each are one of the
most important people in the world because they are unique/different and
that their is no one else in the world just like them. That is what makes
them very special.

For our Sunday school preschoolers we made attendance charts in the shape
of a cross. The children's crosses were placed on the wall, with the bottom
of the cross at their current height level. Every Sunday the children placed
attendance stickers on their cross. At Christmas, Easter, and school year
end, we marked the children's growth on their chart. Our theme was
"Growing Together, Standing Strong."

Growing in the garden of Christian love... used pictures of children's faces cut into
carrot tops popping out of the ground. Used green construction paper to make the carrot
tops. Put on brown paper background to look like a garden.

I have a small suit case that each child is able to take home. I ask them to fill it with
things that are special to them from their home. They must be able to fit their special
items in the suitcase. When the child returns for class ( I teach preschool 2 days per
week in my home) he/she is allowed to sit on my lap during circle and show off their
goodies. All the children love being able to take my special suit case home.
A great way to introduce the written word to four year olds is through charting. Type or
print each child's name several times, laminate them. Create or purchase a chart with
large squares. I start with God's creating us all a little different from each other. Day
one: Boys/ Girls: After discussing how we're all created by God in His image, the children
find their names on the wall and place it with ticky tac on the chart under the
appropriate pink or blue person ( if you don't like that, create some other way to
distinguish between the sexes.) Then I charted eye color, hair color, etc. Each day is
something different: What kind of shoes are you wearing: buckle, velcro, tie, or slip on?
What kind of pet do you have or want? How many buttons are you wearing? What is your
favorite color? What is your favorite cookie? The possibilities are endless.
